Erice, Sicily

Erice, Sicily sits on top of Mt. Erice on the southwest coast of Sicily at an elevation of 750 meters (2,450 feet0. The mountain slopes drop immediately and very steeply to the sea. It was the location of our next hotel (for one night) after the Valley of the Temples. Of course the drive up (from sea level) was riveting especially for Heather who got to be on the outside (again) for what seemed most of the way up and of course what goes up........ Her knuckles are permanently white after this trip since many of our hotels have been at the top of mountains. Of course the views have been outstanding.

Erice was founded by the Phoenicians. That Erice was largely destroyed. Much of what you see today was built by the Normans after 1150. The architecture in different walls, the castles, churches, arches, courtyards, businesses and houses have had many influences including the period the Saracens controlled the area.
